Pajarito Powder Awarded Patent for VariPore© Process

Patented technologies are vital to an emerging startup’s ability to make progress in research and development efforts and grow enterprise value. Pajarito Powder is fortunate to have Dr. Alexey Serov as Chief Scientist, as he is the primary inventor of several of the technologies underlying Pajarito Powder’s products.

Dr. Serov, formerly a Research Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico, initially developed the technology during his association there, making further advances with the Pajarito Powder team and formally securing the patent at the beginning of June. “It’s great that we’re able to license this critical technology from UNM. The patent builds on the VariPore© process and is now an essential part of how we approach advances in fuel cell technology,” commented Dr. Serov on the newly issued patent.

The patent relates to Platinum Group Metal-free (PGM-free or PGMf) catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR), based on charge transfer organic complexes, and specifically covers making PGM-free catalysts and engineered carbon supports, using charge transfer salts. The patent uniquely places Pajarito Powder in a position to build highly customized engineered carbon supports for fuel cells as well as PGM-free fuel cell catalysts.

The extent to which Pajarito Powder can customize these supports opens our product line to a wide array of developers, increasing interest in our research efforts and ultimately fulfilling our objective to have our engineered carbon supports included in industry fuel cell stacks on a large scale. As of the beginning of this month and thanks to the efforts led by Dr. Serov, Pajarito Powder is one critical step closer to achieving its goal.
