Engineered Catalyst Supports™ (ECS)

Protection & Superior Performance

Conventional catalyst supports use common carbon blacks that suffer from well-documented failure modes: electrochemical oxidation at high potentials (start-stop cycles in automotive applications), micropore flooding, and agglomeration of platinum nanoparticles over time.  These degradation mechanisms are a primary limiter of fuel cell stack lifetime.

Pajarito Powder’s engineered catalyst supports (ECS) are graphitic mesoporous carbons that preserve electrical conductivity and high surface area while offering substantially greater corrosion resistance, more accessible porosity for mass transport, and better-defined surface chemistry for controlled platinum dispersion and retention. The interconnected mesopore structure offers better protection from the ionomer, better water management and superior overall performance.

Our proprietary manufacturing platform tightly controls the morphology of these materials with specific pore diameters, volumes and distributions and is highly scalable to metric tons.
ECS provides the foundational building block for high-performing catalysts.

Additional Features and Tunability

Our VariPore™ process and advanced graphitization allows for targeted syntheses to control carbon surface area, pore volume, and pore size distribution. Carbons can also be customized in degree of graphitization and heteroatom doping.

Our ECS is unique and processes differently than conventional carbons. For recommendations on ink and coating formulations, please contact us.
