Pajarito Powder selected for U.S. Department of Energy Hydrogen Fuel Cell Project

August 16, 2018

The U.S. Department of Energy announced selection of 28 new projects to support early-stage research and development of innovative hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. Pajarito Powder was selected for contract negotiation for the project, “Active and Durable PGM-free Cathodic Electrocatalysts for Fuel Cell Application,” for which Pajarito Powder will be the lead awardee.

Pajarito Powder CTO and President Dr. Barr Zulevi expressed great pride in the recognition this provides, “Our team has done an outstanding job, advancing the state-of-the-art in PGM-free catalysts for fuel cells; we could not do this without the immense support of the Fuel Cell Technology Office of the Department of Energy, which continues to lead the way in the development of these important energy technologies.” Pajarito Powder Chief Scientist Dr. Alexey Serov, the Principal Investigator on this project commented, “We are supremely excited to contribute to the advancement of PGM-free materials and look forward to broader adoption of these materials into commercial fuel cells.”

The contract, though yet to be negotiated, amounts to almost $1,000,000 in monies to be administered by Pajarito Powder. The work on precious-metal-free catalyst materials is essential for moving toward long-term sustainability of fuel cells. Pajarito Powder’s Precious-Metal-Free (PMF) Catalyst is a completely PGM-free commercially available solution for PEM fuel cells and represents the industry-leading PGM-free catalyst on the market today.

Pajarito Powder, LLC is a venture-backed startup, funded by the Verge Fund, Omphalos Venture Partners and other investors, focused on developing next-generation fuel cell catalysts and catalyst supports for the automotive and other industries. Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) are the industry recognized replacement for the internal combustion engine (ICE), using potentially sustainably produced hydrogen, emitting only water and providing similar use modalities as ICE vehicles. Working with major automotive OEMs, suppliers and other fuel cell-related manufacturers, Pajarito Powder is well positioned to lead advancements in catalyst and catalyst supports for the burgeoning hydrogen fuel cell industry.
